Crafting a real-time voice

The Challenge

Dataminr is a platform using AI technology that delivers real-time information from 1M+ public data sources to clients across the public and private sectors, empowering organizations to respond to critical events and emerging risks before they unfold.

As a member of the editorial team, we sought to improve KPIs - speed of alert delivery, accuracy of content and correct prioritization - while also maintaining a consistent Dataminr voice that made sense to clients across diverse industries.

The Strategy

  • A monthly review was conducted of 60 domain experts with management to identify trends in office performance. I sorted through data pulls in Excel looking for pain-points.

  • Together with the editorial team, I contributed to designing and implementing comprehensive individual and group training programs, working with senior leadership to monitor progress and standardize best practices.

  • Training consisted of a structured program of progressively challenging tests for new employees, targeted exercises for veteran employees, interactive group training presentations, and reverse shadowing for real-time feedback.

The Solution

Through implementing training, and preparing guidance and scenario-planning materials, I helped:

  • Improve headline delivery speed by 51% over six months.

  • Reduced corrections issued on stories by two-thirds over six months.

  • Codify best practices into a formal protocol and distributed it to managers. Because of the Seattle office’s improved performance, the New York office ended up adopting the protocol.

  • Improve four employees’ KPIs to meet office averages.

  • Conduct management audits per request.

  • Trained four teammates to serve as back-up editors during busy times.

Providing Editorial Guidance Reference Materials

To ensure consistent coverage in Dataminr’s 24/7 newsroom, we developed effective editorial guidance and promoted its adoption across Dataminr offices.

Some key steps included:

  • Referencing AP Style.

  • Contributing to the development of house style guides and lookahead materials.

  • Understanding our audience - we needed a common voice that made sense to different clients in media, law enforcement, government and corporate.

  • Providing turnover guidance for employees in other offices covering continuing stories.

  • Drafting and pre-approving templates for potential stories

  • Providing regular training for colleagues on guidelines.

  • Seeking out area and topical expertise from colleagues.
